Shogun: Total War
Add-on for the popular strategy/war game. You can play as either the Japanese or the invading Mongols. There are several campaign to choose from including some not featuring the moguls (instead they are based on internal conflict in feudal Japan). New features include scenario and map editors and new multi-player options. There are also new terrain and unit types and refinements have been made to the graphics and AI. Among the new units is the ultra-powerful Kensai warrior.

Sid Meier's Civil War Collection
RTS that recreates the American Civil War. It is a compilation of the main game, Gettysburg, released back in 1997, the add-on Antietam and some extra scenarios set in South Mountain. The game combines well-balanced gameplay with a lot of depth, effective graphics and a good control system. You can play against the computer or up to three other people (over LAN or online).

Soldiers at War
Turn-based strategy game set during WW2. You control eight-men squads through a campaign of fifteen challenging, historically-based battle missions. There is also a selection of stand-alone levels and a comprehensive scenario editor that adds considerable replayability value to the game. The multi-player mode allows up to four people to participate in competitive games via LAN or on-line. You select your squad from a group of 32 men, each with their own skills profile and you must equip them to suit each mission. The game's control system is effective and in-mission you control your men using the mouse and have some 40 different commands at your disposal. The game is played on over-head viewed maps with 3D terrain. You can remove layers of terrain in order to keep close track of the action. The game's graphics are effective, despite the age of the game.

Classic WW2 turn-based war game. The game offers a lot of depth, combined with an effective interface and reasonable graphics (although it is a DOS game and pretty dated). The game is played on hex-based maps and battles are at the battalion level. The game features a good tutorial and a choice of historically-based scenarios, short campaigns or long campaign. Alternatively, you can use the scenario editor or opt for a randomly generated battle. The game covers the war in Europe, North Africa, Russia and the Pacific and loads of authentic units feature. It employs a point system that enables you to 'pay' for repairs and buy new units between connected battles. Multiple difficulty levels and a two-player mode (by email or over modem or network) add considerable replayability value to the game.

Steel Panthers 2: Modern Battles
Turn-based war game. Unlike the first game, which was set in WW2, this sequel covers later conflicts such as the Vietnam War and the Arab-Israeli conflicts. Alongside the historically-based scenarios, are a few fantasy settings relating to 'WW3'. The game combines a lot of depth with an effective interface and reasonable graphics (although it is pretty dated). It is played on hex-based maps viewed from an overhead perspective.
The game offers a choice of over fifty scenarios and six short campaigns (including those set in the Golan Heights, Germany and Kuwait). Most are historically-based although a few fictitious battles are incorporated. Alternatively, you can use the scenario editor or opt for a randomly generated battle. Two players can compete by modem, LAN or email. Loads of units feature, the game employs a point system so you can 'pay' for repairs or buy new units. A complete weapons and equipment encyclopedia is included.

Steel Panthers 3: Brigade Command 1939-1999
Turn-based war game that combines elements form the first two games with some new additions. The main difference is in the scale of the battles, they are now much larger. Maps are bigger and many more units participate in battles. This installment employs the same graphics engine and effective interface of the previous games. The features battles from WW2 and after, up to a few fictitious conflicts set in the late 1990s! The game is played on hex-based maps viewed from an overhead perspective. Loads of authentic units feature and you can also create your own. The game employs a point system so you can 'pay' for repairs or buy new units.

Steel Panthers World at War
Version of the classic turn-based war game that is available as a free download. The three earlier Steel Panthers games were all DOS based, whilst this update is Windows based. It offers better graphics, AI and sound together with new terrain and unit types. Also, an on-line multi-player mode has been added. The game offers a choice of scenarios and campaigns including a long campaign (set during WW2). You can also create your own battles using the scenario editor or select a randomly-generate battle.

Real-time strategy/war game set during WW2. You take control of one of three forces; the Allies, Russians or Germans. The game combines large, well-rendered landscapes and authentic units with a good control system for well-balanced gameplay. Many unit types with feature, covering land and air. The main single-player mode is campaign mode. There are three campaigns, one for each force. Campaign missions can also be played separately. Famous episodes are recreated, such as the Battle of Stalingrad and D-Day landings. There is also a strong multi-player mode for up to 12 players, arranged in teams, via LAN or Net. The game is played on an isometric landscape with 3D units. The interface is effective.
