Real War

Real-time strategy game currently in development by makers of simulations used by the US military. The game will have a fictitious setting involving a terrorist attack against the US and the subsequent retaliation. The game will feature two campaigns with a total of 24 scenarios and around 40 unit types. It promises a lot of depth and good design. The multi-player mode will able four players to participate.

Red Thunder: Victory in The East

Historically-based wargame set during WW2, this game covers the action on the Eastern Front in Summer 1944. You play either the Russians or the Germans. The game offers a selection of scenarios allowing you to play out alternative strategies. The game is played on hex-based maps and numerous types of authentic units are incorporated. The game employs effective interface and control systems. It boasts good AI and attempts to reproduce many of the factors which effect a force's performance.

Remote Assault

Real-time strategy/war game. The game is set in the future during a second American civil war fought by robotic units. Both land and air units feature. You play the southerners, called the Alliance and there are campaigns of linked scenarios. Objectives include defend or take and hold an area. There is also a two-player mode for games over LAN or online. The game is played on an isometric landscape and the graphics and interface are effective.

Rising Sun

Part of the successful Campaign series of war games set during the Second World War (this is the follow-up to East Front and West Front). This game deals with the war with Japan and incorporates many new unit and terrain types. There are 30 pre-set scenarios to work through together with four linked campaigns. The a multi-player option provides for games via LAN to Net. The game is played on a good map of the battlefield. Viewed from an overhead perspective, units and other features are rendered in 3D. There are many video clips included and these add a degree of realism to the game. The game's interface and menus system are effective.

Rising Sun: Imperial Strike

Add-on for the WW2 war game, Rising Sun. Like the main game, it focuses on the pacific theater. It features two new scenarios and ten new missions. Among the locations featured are Burma and the Philippines. No significant changes have been made to the gameplay, interface or graphics. As before, you can play against the computer or another player.

Road to Moscow

Historically-accurate strategy/war game due for release in mid-2000. The game will recreate the conflict in Eastern Europe and Russia during WW2. A notable feature of the game is that it will feature real-time, rather than turn-based, combat. You'll assume high-level command and will be responsible for the way all your side's forces are deployed. You'll have to organize supply lines and develop a unified strategy. The game promises advanced graphics and AI. There will be single-player campaigns and stand-alone scenarios, together with a multi-player mode for up to seven players (over LAN or on-line).

Robert E. Lee: Civil War General

Turn-based strategy/war game set during the American Civil War. You'll take the role of General Lee, one of the most successful commanders in the Confederacy, in recreations of his famous encounters. Many video clips are included adding atmosphere to the game. There is a choice of full campaign or stand-alone missions. A tutorial is incorporated to help you get the hang of the game. Three difficulty settings add replayability value to the game. A good feature is the historical database that provides detailed background information on many aspects of the Civil War. The game is played on map screens and you must organise and keep your troops supplied. The game's graphics and interface are affective. It offers a lot of depth and takes into account many factors in the unfolding battles, including troop morale.
