Wages of War: The Business of Battle

Turn-based strategy/war game. You control a squad of mercenaries through a series of objective-based missions. The game is set in the near future and the world is politically fragmented with terrorists organizations and drug barons flourishing. The game employs a money system, you get payments before and after jobs and have to pay for background information and equipment. You view the in-mission arena from an overhead perspective. You control each member of your six or seven man squad individually. Each one has a set number of action points per turn. A large selection of actions are available and each one has a points value. The game's graphics and control system are good.

Stock market simulation. When the game begins your choices of investments are limited, but options increase as the game progresses. The game is played in real-time. There is a mutli-player option for Net games. The game offers a lot of depth and simulated world events, company reports and other events effect the way the markets develop. War Along The Mohawk

This game was released with the title 'Fields of Fire' in Europe. It's a historically-based, real-time strategy/role-playing game set in 1757 during the war between the French (aided by native Americans) and the British. The game offers a full campaign from each of the two sides, consisting of eighteen scenarios as well as a two-player mode. There is a tutorial incorporated to help you get the hang of this complex game. There game features a choice of over 20 varied characters for each side to form the members of your party for each mission. There are many skills for them to develop and an extensive inventory of equipment and weapons is incorporated. The game's graphics are adequate and the control system works well.

War in the Pacific: Struggle Against Japan 1941-1945

Turn-based war game in development. It will be wide-ranging and historically accurate, covering the entire period '41-45. The game will be played on hex-based maps, with each hex covering 50 miles. Game turns will cover between one and seven days. You'll be able to play against the computer or another player (via email, hotseating or online). The vast selection of authentic unit types will cover land, air and sea. Bases will play and important part in the action and supply lines will be represented. The human factor will also be modeled, in areas such as previous combat experience and fatigue. The game promises to deliver effective graphics and a well-designed interface.

Real-time strategy game. Set in the future, you take the role of the CEO of a company whose business is hiring out mercenaries. As a result, the game incorporates business-sim elements alongside the main mission-based strategy game. You can choose to invest in stocks and even take over other companies. Research and development of new technologies/unit types plays an important part in the game and you'll need to fund this, as well as deciding in which areas to concentrate the efforts of your scientists. A large variety of units types can be developed. Your mercenaries come in three varieties and you decide the number and type of men to be on each mission. It is possible to send personnel for special training in order to gain new skills. Missions are conducted on a landscape viewed from overhead. You command your forces and the interface and menu systems are effective. The game's graphics are adequate, although they are clearly surpassed by more recent games.

Eagerly-anticipated game currently in development. It will combine RTS with RPG gameplay elements. The emphasis will be on action rather than resource management. The game's strong plot follows on from that of the last game. The game is set in a magical, fantasy universe. You'll control the hero character who will lead squads of up to twelve units. As the game progresses, you'll gain further heroes, each of whom can control a group of units. Heroes will develop with experience and a good selection of distinctive races will feature in the game.

Futuristic real-time strategy game based on a movie of the same name. The game is premised on a conflict between a human group (NORAD) and a group of mechanized warriors (WOPR). The game incorporates a variety of unit types covering air, land and water based units and numerous types of specialized weapons. The battlefield and units are rendered in good 3D and the control system is effective.

You command a group of Ultramarines and send squads of men to complete the various missions. The gameplay consists of tactical combat. You must select and equip five-member squads. Managing the development of individual men is necessary since they gain experience in the field and this becomes increasingly important as the game progresses. The game allows you to develop complex strategies and the control system works well. There is also the option for randomly-generated missions and four people can compete over LAN. The game is played on an isometric view landscape and the graphics are effective.

Turn-based strategy game set in the complex, fantasy universe of Warhammer 40,000, which was developed as a board-based war game. There is a campaign of some 30 missions tied together with a plot. You play the leader of the Imperium of Man and must guide your soldiers in a conflict against an Ork army. There are also single missions and you can play against up to four players over LAN. The game is played on a isometric landscape and there are some 85 different unit types. The game's graphics and interface are effective, although the game now looks quite dated.

Real-time strategy game set in the complex, fantasy universe of Warhammer (developed as a board-based war game). The game is premised on a conflict between an alliance of humans, dwarves and elves and a group of undead invaders. The campaign offers a series of increasingly challenging battles interspersed with good cutscenes that advance the story. The gameplay consists of tactical combat, before each battle you must deploy your units and then you control them in-mission. Losses sustained in battles cannot be replaced so you must manage these carefully. The game is played on an isometric landscape. The PC version supports two players via modem connection. The PlayStation version offers no multi-player mode.

Although related to the other 'Warlords' games, this game involves real-time, rather than turn-based, gaming and is not part of the series proper. The game combines good graphics with in-depth gameplay and a well-designed gameworld. You define and develop a character through the game, which consists of a series of missions. The premise is that two magical meteorites have struck the planet, one good and one evil. After the first section of the game you can choose to fight on either side. The gameplay involves resource management and tactical combat incorporating diverse types of unit, weapons and magical spells. Alongside main single-player game is a Skirmish mode, which gives players specific objectives to be completed, and a multi-player mode for games via LAN or Net.

The graphics are adequate, although now a bit dated.

There is also a random battle generator that adds considerable replayability value to the game. Significant changes have been made to the game engine to reflect the nature of war of the period. This effects the formations available and the relative strengths of units such as cavalry. The game's control system and graphics are highly effective.

The game is played on a hex-based map with 3D features. There are multiple views available to help you keep track of the action. The game incorporates a great deal of accurate detail, reflected in the large number of unit types included. A good range of terrain types feature, further adding to the realism of the game. The graphics, interface and controls are effective.

Loads of character customization options will be available including detailed adjustments of character appearance. Both conventional weapons and magical skills will be incorporated. The gameworld will be very big and cover a range of environment types and buildings. The game will employ fully 3D graphics. The interface promises to be well-designed.

Online war game. You choose from a variety of combat arenas and fight on either the Allied or Axis side in dynamic campaigns. Each arena supports up to 1000 players. Air, land and sea-based warfare are recreated and you select from a variety of roles including tank commander, pilot and infantryman. You have the chance to progress through the ranks. The game is played from a first-person perspective and employs fully 3D graphics, which are reasonable. The interface is problematic and the original release suffers significantly from bugs.

You'll be able to play Iraq, USA or Russia. Game options will be single-player campaign or skirmish modes, or the multiplayer mode (for up to eight players). The campaign will consist of a series of stand-alone scenarios. The game will employ a modified Earth 2150 engine. Improvements over that game will include greater freedom of view and a refined interface.

Worms World Party

Installment in the popular series of 2D strategy games featuring worm warriors. The gameplay remains essentially the same as in the previous games with some tweaks and additions. There are 40 new single-player missions, however, the game concentrates on multi-player gaming. There is a strong on-line mode (on same machine or over LAN or Net) for deathmatches or missions. Some 40 competitive and cooperative missions are available for multi-player games. A map editor is also available. The graphics have been improved since the last game and new environment designs are included. Although there are 60 weapons types available, no new weapons have been added since the last game.

Turn-based strategy game and third in this successful series. Up to four teams of up to six (or even eight) worms do battle on stylized 2D landscapes. There are turn time-limits, the length of which can be adjusted. Teams can be human- or computer-controlled. On PC, it is possible to play on-line.
