Real-time strategy game with RPG elements. You play a Wizard's apprentice, named Cornelius, whose master has disappeared. The strong plot of the game revolves around your search for you master and also includes many sub-plots. The main single-player game consists of a series of levels. The main objective of each levels is to kill an opposing wizard. Over the course of these your character develops his skills as in an RPG. There is also a good multi-player mode.

Magic & Mayhem: The Art of Magic
This turn-based strategy game with RPG elements is due for release in early 2001. You'll once again take the role of a wizard's apprentice. This time your character will find himself in the middle of a conflict between various factions. The single-player campaign will consists of a series of challenging levels, each with the main aim of defeating an opposing wizard. Levels will be tied together with a strong story. The gameplay will primarily involve developing your inventory and spell book and engaging in combat. Over the course of the game you'll improve your skills and add to your inventory of items and spells, as in a RPG. This sequel will employ an all-new graphics engine and it promises impressive 3D graphics. The interface and control will be refined and a zoomable camera will help you keep track of the action.

Magic: The Gathering
RPG with strategy game component based on the MTG card-based system. The basis of the game is the collection of cards that represent land (control of mana), artifacts, spells and creatures. Some 350 of the thousands of cards in the series are included in this game. The game is fairly complex and a good tutorial is incorporated. There are two main game modes; campaign and duel. In duel mode you take control of a selection of 60 cards for duels against the computer. In campaign mode your character embarks on a quest to save the magical realm of Shandalar. This mode combines traditional computer RPG elements with the card game rules. The overhead map switches to dueling table when an enemy is encountered. There is also an Encyclopedia function that gives players access to the full rules and information on all the featured cars. Three difficulty levels, add considerable replayability value to the game. The game's boasts effective graphics, with the cards rendered in fine detail.

Real-time strategy game based on the Magic The Gathering: Battlemage card-based RPG. The game has no tutorial to explain the complex MTG system. It features an extensive selection of the cards rendered in accurate detail. Games are played on an overhead map. There is a choice of game options between stand-alone battle and campaign. The campaign consists of battles tied together with story developed through good FMV sequences. Along the way, you'll meet various NPCs and have a choice of responses with a chance of gaining or losing cards. The campaign requires you to gain dominion over the entire gameworld of Corondor. The game's interface and graphics could be better. The game is now a few years old and shows its age.

Turn-based strategy/war game. Set in space, you control one of forty distinctive groups vying for survival after the destruction of their solar system. The gameplay revolves around maintaining and extending control of asteroids, the only source of resources available. The asteroids move in space and may even collide. Starting positions and maps are randomly generated for each game. You must develop a fleet and defenses in order to survive. Resource management, research and development of new technologies and strategic combat are at the heart of the gameplay. The game has a lot of depth and it will take some time to master its subtitles. The game is played through numerous menu screens and a reasonable 3D rendering of the map and ships. Alongside the single-player mode, is a strong on-line multi-player option. Up to 40 players can participate in on-line games with perimeters set by the GM.

Man of War 2: Chains of Command
Real-time naval strategy sim. The game offers a choice of 20 single missions and two full campaigns. In one you take the role of American naval hero John Paul Jones ad the other is based on the Napoleonic Wars (you play the British). You begin as the captain of a fleet and earn promotion through a series of missions. You control the navigation, sails, weapons and crew f your ships. There are two higher levels of command; division and fleet commander. The game's interface is straightforward. The multi-player mode allows up to 40 people to play on-line or via LAN. The graphics are adequate.

Master of Monsters: Disciples of Gaia
Turn-based strategy game with RPG component and fantasy setting. You take the role of one of six commanders with an army of monsters. The game is played on a hex-based map and revolves around securing control of the many towers scattered around since these can be used to summon fresh monsters. You are responsible for establishing and developing the composition of your force. Many different varieties of monster feature, each with distinctive strengths and weaknesses. You can even combine creature types. You can opt for single or multi-player games. Up to four people can compete and the winner gets to keep the best monster for use in the next game. The game's graphics, interface and controls are generally effective. The AI could be better. Play is accompanied by a limited selection of sound effects and bland tunes.

Master of Orion
Classic space-based RTS. The gameplay involves building up an empire and a fleet of ships, resource management, combat and diplomacy. The game features ten distinctive races. You can play any of these and before each game you set the size of the universe, number of races and difficulty level. The aim is to settle a home planet and from here move out and colonize other planets. In order to do this you must build up a fleet by harnessing resources and researching/stealing new technologies. The game is played via a map screen and menus screens. The galaxy map shows planets and stars of varying colors, each denoting a different types of planet. The types are variously suited to particular races. You can play against the computer or other players by hotseating. As expected, the game now looks pretty dated.

In order to do this you have extend control of an area of the city and use the profits to expand and recruit new members your gang. The nature of the game nature and its inclusion of adult themes makes it unsuitable for the younger gamer. Various 'unit' types are available to you the most important are muscle men whose weapons can be upgraded as your progress. Other types include prostitutes, hitmen and fixers. The multi-player mode will allow up to four people to play over LAN or on-line. The game incorporates a useful tutorial. The graphics and control system are generally effective. However, at initial release the game suffered from some significant bugs.
