Heroes of Might & Magic 2: The Succession Wars
Turn-based strategy/war game with major RPG component, set in a fantasy universe. Forces are led by heroes that develop skills through experience, as in a RPG. You must also develop your bases (castles and villages) and exploit and defend resources which enable you to build up your army. The game is played in a large world and is played through various screens, including maps and a hex-based combat screen. The game's premise is that two princes are fighting it out to see which one succeeds to the throne of their father. One is good and the other evil and this is well expressed in the differences between their unit design and the accompanying music. The game offers a choice of two campaigns, one for each side, with a total of some 25 scenarios. There is also an extensive selection of stand-alone scenarios that can be played against the computer or by up to six people by hotseating, modem or serial connection and LAN. The game boasts improved graphics and AI over its predecessor, although it is now a few years old.

The game's premise is that a colony ship is heading for a distant planet, which is thought to be their people's original homeworld. The planet they came from has been destroyed by a powerful enemy force that is now in pursuit and attacking the colony ship. The game is divided into 16 missions and the engaging narrative is largely developed through high-quality cut-scenes. As the game progresses you develop the colony's fleet, manufacturing new units by mining natural resources. The game employs a simple single menu system and a good 3D map. The effective control system is one of the notable features of the game. The combat element is also well implemented, requiring strategic thinking for success. The game boasts excellent 3D graphics and AI. The ships, space-scapes and weapons effects are all well rendered. An appropriate selection of sound effects accompanies play together with an atmospheric soundtrack consisting of a mixture of classical and electronic ambient music. The game incorporates a multi-player option for two to play over LAN or Net. There is also a mission designer that adds significant replayability value to the game.
