Third in this series of successful resource management/strategy games. You run a city in the Roman Empire. The game is divided into a series of missions based on particular targets relating to aspects of the city. The size of the area covered by the game has been increased since the last game and more varied types of terrain are now incorporated.

Campaign 1776: The American Revolution

Turn-based strategy game set during the War of Independence. It is related to the classic Battleground games and the engine is based on that used in those games. The main single-player mode is the campaign mode and there are four campaigns to work though. You can also choose a stand-alone scenario. There is a strong two-player mode (via hotseating, serial/modem connection or PBEM). The mixes historically-based battles with some that are made up. The game is played on a zoomable hex-based map and turns are divided up into several phases. A 3D viewing mode is available, although it is of limited use in the heat of battle. Unit types include commanders, artillery, infantry and cavalry regiments (of up to a hundred men). The game's interface is effective and the graphics are functional.

Capitalism Plus

Updated edition of the classic business sim 'Capitalism'. The gameplay has been enhanced with more detail and improved graphics. Other significant additions are the map and scenario editors. The game's premise is that you are part owner of a company with a budget of ten million dollars. You are responsible for defining the company's image and organizing the production and refinement of resources. This includes farming, mining and manufacturing goods. You can invest in research and development to improve these processes. You can also import goods. You then sell your products and can define you marketing strategy, buy and sell shares and even take over other companies. A good tutorial function is included to help you get the hang of the game. The game is played through a series of menu screens and the game's graphics are basic.

Action/strategy game featuring giant robotic fighters called Over Kill Engines. The main gameplay involves constructing and perfecting your Over Kill Engine. Real-time strategy game based on the hit movie The Lost World: Jurassic Park. The premise is that a group of scientists are trapped on an island surrounded by dangerous dinosaurs. You direct the team in setting up a base, collecting and allocating resources and breeding a force of friendly dinosaurs to prevent being overrun by the hostile reptiles. The game consists of a campaign of twelve connected missions. Played on an isometric landscape the game's graphics were reasonable at the time of release (as expected the game now looks pretty dated). Cutscenes intersperse the action and these feature the voices of the actual actors from the movie.

Turn-based strategy game with a gangland theme. Set in a US city, the gameplay revolves around gaining and keeping control of blocks. You must earn and manage cash, engage in combat and even research new equipment. The game offers ten scenarios to choose from, four of which are time-limited. Replayability value is added by a choice of five difficulty levels and a multi-player mode for up to six players via modem connection, LAN or Net.

RTS with RPG elements set in a world inspired by traditional Russian stories. The player takes control of a land which is threatened by its neighbors. The game's interface and graphics are effective.

Turn-based strategy game that was released back in the early 1990s. This is a classic game that has inspired many sequels and spin-offs. Covering a period from pre-history to beyond the present day, the game allows players to develop their empire by harnessing resources, building settlements, units and wonders and developing new technologies in order to expand influence. Combat and diplomacy are also important elements of the gameplay. The game is played on an overhead-viewed landscape with an effective menus system.

Acclaimed turn-based strategy game. You begin in with a single tribe with the aim of world conquest or interplanetary colonization. You can choose from a selection of missions with specific victory criteria or opt for an open-ended game. A scenario editor is incorporated. Notable features of this sequel include, new units and wonders to build, unit hit points during combat, better diplomacy and trade functions and a refined interface. An isometric perspective with 3D graphics replaces the overhead view and flat graphics of the original game. Up to eight nations can be battling for supremacy and the AI is impressive. The gameplay involves exploration, resource management, building cities, developing armed forces, the research and development of new technology and combat. There is an on-line Civilopedia to help the player with any queries. This game offers no multi-player mode, unlike its follow-up Civilization 2: Test of Time.

Sequel to Civilization: Call To Power. This turn-based strategy game covers a period of over six millennia, from 4000BC to 2300AD. You can select from a range of historical races. The gameplay involves managing resources (food, industrial production and money), building cities and military forces, combat and diplomacy. The game employs an extensively modified version of the game engine developed for the original Call To Power. Significant refinements have been made to the graphics and interface. New unit types also feature. The diplomacy and government tools have been improved, political boundaries are now shown and the combat system has been adjusted for more realistic outcomes. The game has several victory conditions. There is also a multi-player mode for games via modem connection, LAN or online.

Add-on pack for the popular RTS game, Pharaoh. The game offers four new campaigns with 15 missions. The campaigns pick up the history of Egypt where Pharaoh left off, covering the period from the Eighteenth Dynasty to the Battle of Actium under Cleopatra VII. The missions include building tombs in the Valley of the Kings and constructing the lighthouse and library at Alexandria. New units include lamp and paint makers, artisans and henna farms. New enemies include the Assyrians. Persians, Phoenicians and Romans (you'll also get to use Roman troops).

Real-time strategy game. The original game appeared in 1995 for the PC and Mac. In 1997 a version for the PlayStation was released and in 1999 a N64 version appeared. The two sides are the evil Brotherhood of NOD (a criminal organization) and the Global Defense Initiative (a UN force). You get to play both sides and fight it out various scenarios. You must launch effective attacks on the enemy whilst protecting your bases. Resource management is an important element of the gameplay with the resource Tiberium being the most important. The game offers a selection of single-player missions and the multi-player option allows for up to four player to play via LAN or two people to play via modem/serial connection or on the same console. There are many unit types included, with unique unit-types for each side. Orders are issued to units using an easy-to-use menu system. The game is played on isometric landscapes.

Real-time strategy game. The much-anticipated latest game in the Command and Conquer series. Set in the future, the game hinges on the control of the resource Tiberium - a poisonous metal that emerges from the ground and is used to make weapons. You play one of two sides the Global Defense Initiative (good guys) or the Brotherhood of Nod (global Mafia-type organization) in self-contained missions placed within an overall narrative. There are 12 main missions for each side with additional subset objectives.

Add-on pack for Tiberian Sun. It offers single-player campaign and multi-player modes (via LAN and Net). As a result the Western Allies are left facing a powerful USSR with both sides equipped with futuristic technology. The game consists of a series of timed missions. Scenarios and objectives are varied. Objectives range from overrunning the enemy force to more subtle missions such infiltrating bases.

Sequel to an acclaimed original and part of the highly successful series of Command and Conquer RTS games. Set in a future with an alternative history, that follows on from the original Red Alert, the game is premised on a war between the Soviets and US. This time the action takes place on US soil when the Russians invade and the Americans have to look to the allied states of Europe for help. There is a campaign for either side in the conflict. The multi-player mode enables players to compete over LAN or on-line.

Virtual pet game with strategy element. The player begins by choosing from a clutch of eggs and moving the eggs to an incubator until they hatches. From here, you must care for and teach your creatures, or Norns as they are known. The game is set in a fantasy world called Albia and the player can effect the environments by using the cursor. Language comes into play, your Norns will tell you if they need something and you can encourage/discipline them with yes/no commands and stroking. You can also teach them tricks and ways to avoid danger. There are some other types of creatures that are aggressive and must be avoided. Once your creatures reach maturity they will have offspring. Eventually, the Norns will die. The aim of the game (if there is one) is to breed as many generations as possible. The game employs cute cartoon-style design and good 2D graphics.

The game is set on the fantasy world called Albia that featured in the first game. However, it has been devastated by an earthquake and the Norns must explore the laboratories of an extinct race that have been exposed by the quakes. The game has a complex DNA modeling system that will develop your creatures accurately over the course of generations right down to their brains which will, in turn, effect behavior. Another new feature of the game, is the on-line support that allows you to import new items.

Creatures 3

Third in this popular series of virtual pet games with strategy element. As in the original, the player begins by choosing from a clutch of eggs and moving them to an incubator until they hatch. From here you must care for and teach your creatures, or Norns as they are known. Alternatively, you can opt to take on two fully grown creatures. This time the game is set on a spaceship and areas of the ship can be used to heal and teach your norns. There are also replicating machines to reproduce objects. There are numerous types of objects scattered around that can be used in various ways and combined for new functions. As well as the aggressive Grendel creatures, the Norns will encounter others called Ettins that will steal objects that the Norns use. It is possible to develop defenses against the Grendels.

Creatures Adventures

Virtual pets/ puzzle game. This is a simplified version, aimed at kids, of the previous Creatures games. The creatures featured in the game are called 'Norns'. You begin with two eggs that develop into cute creatures, one of each sex. You must cared for them and direct their actions. The creatures can perform a range of actions such as planting seeds and baking bread. You can also dress them up in a selection of outfits. You must also train them in good behavior by using a tickle stick to reward them, or a squirt bottle to punish them.

A variety of landscape and resource types are included. The game is played on a isometric landscape with 3D features and units and the graphics are very detailed.

Futuristic strategy game and follow-up to 'Mission Force: Cyberstorm'. It is set in the futuristic 'EarthSeige' universe, where corporations run things on Earth and her colonies and giant robotic warriors (HERCs) are used in combat. You take the role of a young executive in one of eight competing corporations. You progress by researching HERCs, enlisting and training HERC pilots and then taking on your competitors on the battlefield. You can choose between real-time and turn-based combat. The game's graphics and controls are effective.
