RPG/adventure game featuring the famous plumber and his friends. The game is released in Japan with the title Mario Story. The name 'Paper Mario' refers to the fact that the characters in the game are 2D whilst the environments are rendered in full 3D. Also he behaves as if drawn on actual pieces of paper so for instance, instead of falling heavily he floats to the ground.

Action adventure game. The first game was released only in Japan. The game's strong story is based on a novel by Hideaki Sena, a best seller in Japan. You play a female NYPD cop named Aya Brea who has psychic powers as well as being proficient with a gun. The game's plot revolves her hunt for victims of a virus that turns people into aggressive mutants. The game features an extensive arsenal of high-powered weaponry, access to which is decided by the accumulation of 'bounty points' earned for successful kills. Aya develops seven psychic skills over the course of the game, such as telekinesis. The game boasts good level design and graphics. The camera system and control system are effective.

Persona

Innovative RPG. The game has a modern setting and teenagers as the main characters. The story revolves around a philosophical search for the meaning of life and the defeat of a demon invasion. The gameplay consists of exploration, combat, interacting with NPCs, developing your character, collecting items and puzzle-solving. Combat involves both conventional weapons and magical spells and is turn-based. A range of guns is available. You can also collect components of spells which make them more powerful. The action is viewed from a variety of perspectives, mostly a slightly overhead third-person view is employed but dungeon sections are viewed from a first-person perspective. An innovative feature of the game is the 'rumor' system, different things happen depending on which rumors you accept. The game's graphics and control systems are effective.

Persona 2: Eternal Punishment

RPG and follow-up to Persona 2: Innocent Sin. The game combines a complex story with good gameplay. Set in the near future, you play a character named Maya Amano, who embarks on a quest to uncover the reason for strange feelings she's been having. She faces opposition in the form of the Joker, who has put a curse on the city that is making people ill. A strong cast of characters features in the game. The gameplay involves exploration, combat, character development, item collection and interaction with NPCs. The combat system is magic-based and involves summoning magical entities known as Personas. The game combines 2D and 3D graphical elements and you view the action mostly from a third-person perspective.

Innovative RPG. The game has a modern setting and the story revolves around a search for a cure for an unknown disease. The main characters are teenage kids and you take the role of student Tatsuya Suou. In order to lift the curse of the disease the kids must collect human dreams in order to open the Gate of Heaven.

Phantasy Star Online

RPG offering fully online games on Dreamcast, as well as being an off-line game. The game offers advanced graphics and gameplay with a lot of depth. The adventure begins with the destruction of a colony on the planet of Ragol. Your character is sent to investigate. There are numerous sub-quests to choose from and these will bring you closer to unraveling the mystery.

Phantasy Star Online 2

This sequel to an acclaimed original is currently in development. Like the first game it will offer online games, as well as being an off-line game. New character, weapons and boss types will feature alongside the new gameworld. The gameplay will involve exploration, real-time combat and interaction with other characters. Conventional weapons and magical spells will be available. When playing online, you'll be joined by player characters and instant translation will ensure that you are able to communicate with your teammates. Some improvements to the graphics and design are promised.

Pirates Online

Massive multi-player RPG currently in development. The game promises to combine advanced 3D graphics and a large, evolving gameworld with varied gameplay. You'll be able to create a character and embark on careers that include pirate, explorer, merchant and soldier. You'll begin with a basic ship and earn or steal to pay for upgrades. The game will not just be set at sea, land-based communities will also feature. Communications between players will enable diplomacy and the formation of alliances. You'll be able to roam free or take on one of a selection of pre-set quests. Players will not have to pay a subscription after they have purchased the game.

RPG set in a richly detailed and unusual fantasy universe. The game utilizes the Baldur's Gate engine and has an AD&D license, adding depth to the gaming world.

Pool of Radiance: Ruins of Myth Drannor

This RPG is the sequel to an original released way back in 1988. It will be based on the 3rd Edition D&D rule book. You'll have an extensive selection of character creation and development options. The premise is that when your character is sent to investigate a problem with the Pool of Radiance he/she is swept into another dimension to a world called Myth Dranor. The game will have a non-linear structure. Your party will have up to six members and these can be either computer-controlled or controlled by other players (via LAN or Net). The gameplay will consist of traditional RPG fodder with numerous sub-quests, spells and items to collect, NPCs to interact with and challenging enemies to face. The game's graphics and design promise to be good.
