Grand Theft Auto

Highly successful, action-driving game set on the streets and highways in the USA. Your aim is to be a successful hoodlum wreaking violent havoc. The degree of mayhem you bring to the city determines the level of police activity to catch you. The game is played from a overhead perspective and you drive around a living breathing city, often scaring the pedestrians. You can steal any vehicles you come across. There are a number of missions which you can choose to perform. They are relayed to you from the city's crime bosses. But you can just as easily pass over any, or even all, of the missions and simply spend your time stealing, driving around and then selling on cars. Accumulating cash allows you to progress on to other chapters and cities. There are three cities in all. They are based on Miami, NYC and San Francisco. Play is accompanied by a good range of speech samples, sound effects and background music. The graphics of this game are adequate but its real strength is its highly amusing, adult gameplay. Alongside the single-player game, is a multi-player mode for up to 4 players over LAN or modem/serial connection.

Grand Theft Auto 2

Action-driving game set on the streets of a city in USA. Sequel to the highly successful (and controversial) Grand Theft Auto. As in the original game, your aim is to be a successful hoodlum wreaking violent havoc in the city. The level of your crimes and the mayhem you bring to the city determines the amount of police interest in your activities. A major improvement is in the presence of the gangs who control the city. There are seven gangs in all and they include the Russian Mafia and even the Krishnas! Gangs will defend their areas vigorously and bear a grudge if you cross them. You are employed by the leaders directly (unlike in the first game) and build up your 'street cred' as you pull off various jobs. These include stealing cars, delivering money and assassinating rivals. You can pick and choose your missions. With so many gangs in play you are likely to make enemies when you do accept a mission. It is possible to play one gang off against another. The city is more 'alive' than in the first game with pedestrians behaving more realistically. Among the new features are muggers, assassins and have-a-go-heroes that mingle among the pedestrians, and bodyguards who can travel with you. Another innovation is that if your driving a city bus or taxi you can pick up paying fares. The game allows you to take control of some 60 different types of vehicle and you have a comprehensive range of high-powered weaponry including a novel microwave gun.

A notable difference from the main game is that you drive on the left side of the road. The 1960s-style background music is a good feature of the game.
