Warriors of Might & Magic

Hack and slash action game set in the Might and Magic RPG universe. The main character is a warrior named Aleron who has been fitted with a punishment mask after being found guilty of a crime he didn't commit. He embarks on a mission to prove his innocence. The game consists of 30 levels, each of which is occupied by a special monster that must be slain. There is no multi-player mode. The game's graphics and controls are good. The PlayStation 2 promises significant refinements.

Werewolf: The Apocalypse

Action/adventure game with RPG elements. It is set in the Dungeon Master/White Wolf universe that features vampires, werewolves and other supernatural creatures. You play Ryan who is also a werewolf. He can change between human, dog and wolf man forms. The game combines a strong plot with a richly detailed gameworld, with first-person shooting action. The game consists of 15 challenging levels and you'll face many different types of foe. The game is played from first- and third-person perspectives. A good selection of high-powered guns incorporated into the game. The graphics and design in the game are good and the control system is effective.

Adult-themed adventure game. The gameplay combines some management and puzzle-solving. You play a character named Buck who embarks on a mission to save a planet. In order to do this he must traverse the galaxy in a ship that is also a brothel. The gameplay involves keeping the members of the crew happy and making the odd trade. The game employs puerile humor and sexual images and references. The game employs a simple point-and-click interface.

Horror-themed action adventure game. Set in a school, there are three playable characters; a pupil, student or ghost. There can perform spiritual and physical attacks. There is a multi-player mode for games via modem connection, LAN or online. The game employs fully 3D graphics and is played from a first-person perspective.

RPG due for release in mid-2000. It will combine gameplay close to the original with some new additions and an all-new 3D graphics engine. Individual characters have parts of the main quest to complete and there will be mini-quests and puzzles to be solved. Combat and interaction with NPCs will also play important parts in the game.

Wild Wild West: The Steel Assassin

Action/adventure game based on the movie. The game's plot is set after the movie. You control the lead characters, Jim West and Artemus Gordon through a series of missions on a quest to foil a plot to assassinate the President. You control the characters, one at a time, through different parts of the game. The game's structure is not strictly linear - you can select the order of the missions you do.

Wing Commander 2: Vengence of the Kilrathi

Space combat game with strong narrative. You play Colonel Blair and the game revolves around the continuing war between the Confederacy and the cat-aliens, the Kilrathi. The game consists of a series of missions that are interspersed with high-quality cutscenes and sequences where you can decide Col. Blair's reaction during interactions with other characters. Significant improvements over the original game are incorporated, particularly in the area of graphics.

Wing Commander 3: Heart of the Tiger

Third in this highly successful series of space-based action/adventure games. As with the previous game's this one has a strong plot and cast of characters. You play Colonel Blair (acted and voiced by Mark Hamill of Star Wars fame) and must guide him through a series of battle scenarios as the Confederation seek a way to defeat the Kilrathi. A large number of high-quality cutscenes are incorporated into the game together with sequences where you decide Blair's reaction to certain situations (choices have a limited effect on how the plot unfolds). The game's employs good 3D graphics and the control and interface are effective.

Wing Commander 4: The Price of Freedom

This space combat/adventure game includes lots of FMV sequences that develop the strong narrative. The game's story revolves around the civil war in the human Confederacy and conflict with an alien race, the Kilrathi. You take the role of Confed Colonel Blair acted by Mark Hamill. Malcolm MacDowell and John Rhys-Davis also star. The game's 13 missions have varied objectives, including rescue, salvage and reconnaissance, as well as combat. The game's structure is not purely linear, you make decisions in the responses of Blair during the narrative sequences and there is a choice of missions at points in the game. New weapons have been added since the last game and the graphics are markedly better.

Fifth game in this series of successful series of action/adventure games set in space. The game employs a new 3D graphics engine. The gameplay consists of space combat missions interspersed by high-quality cutscenes and sequences where you decide the reaction of your character reactions to various situations. You play Admiral Blair (played by Mark Hamill) who now commands a fleet of ships as the Confederacy faces a new alien threat. The game is available in a gold edition which includes the add-on 'Secret Missions', a set of 56 extra missions.

RPG and part of a long-running series to have appeared on multiple platforms. This installment is due for release on the PC in early-mid 2000. Set in a fantasy universe, magic plays an important part in the gameworld, alongside conventional technology. The game's strong plot will pick up from where Wizardry 7 left off and it will be possible to import characters developed in that game. The story revolves around a search for a mysterious artifacts of great power. You'll view the action from a first-person perspective. The game promises improved graphics with fully 3D environments and characters. You'll control a party of characters and a major improvement promises to be in the interactions between party members and with other NPCs you'll meet during the game. Enemy AI will also be advanced.

RPG/adventure game and part of a long-running series to have appeared on multiple platforms. You take the role of a wizard's apprentice and embark on a quest to rid the world of an evil force. Magic plays an important part in the game, alongside conventional technology. The game takes place in pre-rendered environments and you view the action from a first-person perspective. The gameplay consists of exploration, combat, interaction with NPCs and puzzle-solving. A wide variety of enemy types will be encountered. The gameworld is well-designed and covers a good range of environment types, both inside buildings and outside. The interface, which allows you to select equipment, and in-game controls are easy-to-use. The character development system is good. The graphics and audio are effective, although the game is now a bit dated.

Wizards & Warriors

RPG originally titled Sword and Sorcery. It comes from the creator for the Wizardry games vols. V-VII. Set in the universe of Gael Serran, the story revolves around a quest to defeat an evil ruler. In order to do this you must find a magical sword. You create your character and there are eleven different character classes available. The game combines reasonable graphics and good design with a strong story and in-depth gameplay. It features an innovative combat system called 'adaptive time phasing' that allows players to set the speed of the game and allow both real-time-style and turn-based combat. The game incorporates some three hundred enemy types and over one hundred NPCs.
