The gameplay involves making strategic decisions about what equipment and supplies to take on the trail. You select the members of your party – each of which has their own characteristics. The game has an historical element – for instance the year in which you start out decides which trails are open to you. Once you've set out, the trial is shown through a series of photos and FMV clips and you can follow your progress on a map. At points along the trail you'll be faced with various obstacles and a selection of choices about how to proceed and you'll also meet NPCs that you can talk to. The game's graphics, interface and controls are effective. There is an easy-to-use and detailed on-line manual available.
