The gameplay involves generating you dragon, training and caring for it and guiding it in battle. There are five basic types of dragon to choose from and their specific attributes are decided by a random input such as a line of text or part of a memory card file. Battles themselves are turn-based. Each turn you select from a limited number of options (block, slash, taunt, advance, retreat and special move). Doing well in tournaments earns cash that can be spent on weapons and training. You can also opt to compete against another player in quick start battles. Notably, once a dragon dies in battle it cannot be regenerated. The game is played through a series of basic screens and battles are conducted in 3D. The game's interface is effective.
