3D space blaster available at a budget price. You take control of a ship and, using its thruster, maneuver it through a series of missions that involve careful piloting and shooting. Objectives include rescuing groups of people, who can then be put to work in factories to build upgrades for your ship. The control system is quite fiddly but, once mastered, it is highly effective. The game's graphics are reasonable and a variety of settings feature.

This first-person action game for use with a lightgun is currently in development. You'll have a choose of two characters, Michel or Albert, and it will be possible to play the game with a friend in the two-player, cooperative mode. The premise is that vampires have taken over a isolated house and must be destroyed, whilst there are prisoners to rescue. Level settings will include dungeons and a forest. The game promises to deliver fast and furious action combined with impressive graphics and atmospheric design.

Vanark

3D shoot 'em up due for release in early 2000. You'll control a spacecraft through a series of levels shooting a variety of alien foe. You'll view the action from a third-person perspective. There will be limited control over the movement of your craft through the levels, although you'll be able to adjust the speed and some levels also have multiple paths to choose from. Ships will be equipped with two types of weapon; guns and tracking missiles. A good feature of the game will be the ability to select your wingmen from pilots with different skill profiles. The wingmen will offer advice as you fly through the levels. The game promises stylish design and good graphics.

Action game currently in development. The gameplay will emphasis stealth rather than all out action. The game will be set in the future during an alien invasion. It will consist of 12 challenging missions with a variety of settings. The game promises to deliver advanced graphics and design.

Vib Ribbon

Innovative 2D platform-style game released at a bargain price. The game employs simple line graphics, white on black. You play a rabbit named Vibri with the aim of negotiating the ribbon course in front of you. Buttons each correspond to a simple move but it becomes necessary to string these together in ever more complex combinations. The game courses are in tune with the music and players can use their own CDs to generate courses. If you do badly Vibri will change into a frog and then a worm and will even cry! If you do well he will grow wings and gain a crown. The game features a music by Japanese artists Laugh and Beats.

Action game. Set in the near future you play an agent of a fictional elite anti-terrorist force, called SION (Special Intelligence Operations Network). There are eight playable characters, each with their own skills profile. The game consists of a series of mission set in locations around the world. A good selection of weapons are incorporated into he game, including an effective sniper rifle. There is a choice of view available; a first-person perspective and two third-person views. The game's graphics are adequate, although there are slow-down problems. Alongside the single-player game is a multi-player option for up to 16 player via LAN or on-line.

Weapons are similarly varied but they all need to be recharged in between attacks. Battles take place in large, well-designed arenas. You view the action from a third-person perspective, from behind your fighter. Two players can compete in versus matches and on-line support is promised. The game's graphics are advanced.

The game's strategy element comes from the fact that you must build up bases in order to develop more powerful weapons. The game is divided into 165 mission and a variety of enemy viruses feature. Vigilante 8

Action game with a 1970s theme that combines driving with combat. Game options are quest, arcade and two-player (cooperative and competitive) modes. The premise is that oil is running out and there is conflict between two groups; the Oil Monopoly Alliance Regime and some violent rebels called the 'Coyotes'. You'll play a member of a third group, an anti-terrorist organization whose member are called 'Vigilantes'. The game consists of battles in open arenas. Settings include LA, an oil refinery and an air strip. There are eight distinctive characters to choose from. Weapon and other power-ups are scattered around the levels. the game's graphics and controls are effective.

Vigilante 8: 2nd Offense

Action game which combines driving and shooting, set in the 1970s. Available on Dreamcast, PlayStation and N64. The game's premise is that, thanks to time travel, the cars have been boosted with futuristic technology. This makes for some innovative action, for instance cars can be driven on water. There are two gangs fighting for control of the streets, one criminal and one good. You can play on either side.
