The gameplay remains action-oriented but there is greater emphasis on puzzling and exploration than in the previous games, and the speed of the game is reduced. The game once again sees Duke facing a variety of alien foe with an arsenal of high-powered weapons. The humorous touches, gory violence and sexual references also remain. The game's plot revolves around an attempt by the aliens to erase Duke from history by traveling trough time. As a result, level settings are varied. They include ancient Rome and the wild west. Duke has an extensive selection of weapons to collect, including pipe bombs and a gattling gun. Alongside the single-player game is a two-player, split-screen mode. The game's graphics are good and the control system is effective. Atmospheric music and numerous voice samples accompany play.
