Management sim. The game's setting spans the period 1800-1930. The game features distinctive locations (in the US, the UK, South America, continental Europe, Asia and Africa). The aim of the game is to maximize profits and squeeze out rival companies. The game is played on an isometric landscape with 3D animated units.
There are eighteen scenarios and the option for open-ended and multi-player games (PC/Mac only). The aim is to maximize profits by creating and developing railroad companies and routes. You have an amount of private money but must also attract investment. Settlements are marked on the map, together with details of their industries. You must decide where to place the tracks, stations and bridges and where to buy and sell goods. In all, over 60 train types and 30 cargo types are incorporated.
The Dreamcast version of the game incorporated the scenarios released as the add-on 'Railroad Tycoon 2: The Second Century'.
