Part of a long-running series of 2D side-scrolling games that combine shooting with platform gameplay. The gameplay is fast and furious and there are loads of power-ups and secrets to be discovered. Alongside Mega Man with his bionic arm with cannon, is an alternative playable character, Zero. Zero is equipped with a sword. There are slightly different cutscenes depending on which character you are playing.
The premise of the game is that two baddies, General and Colonel, are attempting to destroy the world by leading a group of 'reploids' in a rebellion. They intend to destroy the world by using a massive weapon called Enigma. The game consists of eight large levels guarded by challenging bosses. The game's anime-style graphics and control system are effective. Notably, the ability to climb up walls has been added.
