Acclaimed 3D first-person shooter. It employs an extensively modified Quake 2 engine. The game combines well-designed gameplay and a strong story (by Marc Laidlow) with excellent graphics and AI. The game has a cinematic quality. You play a scientist, Gordon Freeman, who has just started work at the isolated Black Mesa research facility when an accident causes an invasion of otherworldly creatures. The army is then sent in to cover up the disaster, killing employees and monsters alike.
The gameplay involves exploring the levels, shooting, and some puzzle-type elements. It is necessary to enlist the help of other Black Mesa employees where possible. A good selection of weapons is incorporated. To add to the immersive nature of the game, the game has a mid-level loading system and there is no big break between levels. The game boasts advanced AI and enemies employ group tactics. The strong multi-player option enables up to 32 players to play over LAN or Net.
